I used to play the original BM board game, where you cannot escape from upper and lower borders and where it was more or less explicitely stated that escaping from the enemy side was akin to get shoted down from enemy fire. So that's my habit
I do not play for stats but nevertheless I play to shot down enemy planes, which is more fun then having them escape from all map borders even if they still have some fuel and engine. And of course I have been shot down trying to reach my side instead of getting out from the closest border.
For what concerns fuel you are complitely right, just in case you missed it read the "strange rule" thread here above.
As a final note, with this thread I just wanted everyone to know that I do not like people getting out from wrong sides, but, ca va sans dire, it's just a game, and I am not going to hunt down these little traitors that will keep on doing it to send them to the martial court.
