I hope you played both version of BM (with and without altitude rules). I think you never played the quotes, and so, making a change, doesn't feel fine to you
As anothr player said, we are playng Blue Max, not Car War, so we need a bit of 3rd dimesion. And they are not "invented" rules :they are comprised in the box. So, in ADVANCED GAME we should insert the altitude rules, absolutely. Even if in a far future, but it must be done.
I would like to dive with my Fokker DVII on the tail of a unsuspecting Se5a (and have a +1 modifier  )
If you have the rules, play some game with altitude, all my friends was enthusiastic when I inserted them in our games, even if them ,like you two, "storced"  their nose when I was explaining
