I just red this news about an air crash between two biplanes recreating a First World War dogfight:

I feel very sorry for the accident victims, and this news made me think again about how hard should have been to fly with these planes during old times.

Even moving around counters can give us a pale idea of the risks taken, so I really can't imagine what kind of men are needed to decide in a split second wether to stall or not, just in front of an enemy firing plane while another enemy plane is approaching.

Just a thought I wanted to share.

Well, it was risky indeed, but at least you had the hope to be master of your own destiny, since probably skill was almost as important as luck to survive the war. People in the trenches, on the other hand, were simply machine gun fodder in one of the greatest mass slaughters of history...

Moreover it seems that heavy anti-aircarft fire in WWII made survival in bombing mission purely a matter of chances.

Needless to say, a wonderful book on the subject is Catch 22.:
"Whoever is crazy may ask to be exempted from war missions. But whoever asks to be exempted from war missions is not crazy".
