Yeah, I saw the emperor tournament, but did't join since I do not like standard games  (uhmm, also I found 1 vs. 1 is quite boring).
I have played the board game and online version many times. I get your point of special damage. However, their is glitch on the online version (pilot kill I really doubt is 1/32 chance)
Actually Explosions and Pilot Killd chits are more frequent in the board game, simply due to the different drawing system of the online version
(in the online version a plane taking 3R, for instance.. can draw the very same chit more then once)
My conclusion is, if u like it, join it. If you don't like it, create the game you like 
Of course, but I am too lazy to open new games, I prefer to join the ones created by others (call it Cocoo sindrome...)
