It should not be possible for a player to be declared the winner of a game who's plane has been shot down.
I would be a tad upset if I shot down 4 enemy planes and was leading by 100 points only to lose the lot because I had to retire through no fuel or being shot down. I was always led to think that Blue Max was a game designed along the lines of amassing points through attacking your enemy and killing them and not just hanging around waiting to see if the currant points leader will run out of fuel. The very essence of this is reflected in the historical fact that pilots fought and died for there country and therefore the better pilot should always prevail.
For what its worth, I think the arguement was against players winning that get shot down, not those that retire because of fuel or other reasons.
I don't have a problem with having a winner that has retired due to fuel or battle damage. In fact, those both seem like great reasons to head for home to me!
