For me the most important is to keep the game fun and "simple" (though as realistic as possible). Unfortunately, "simple" (or better still "playable") and "realistic" are more than often antithetic terms. They are the opposite ends of a scale on wich the game lays, more or less toward one or another.
So, in an advanced game where the status of the others plane should not be known, I think it would be fair that if you get a gun destroyed or an observer killed that should stay private. Leaving alone the gun (about wich the rules are IIRC pretty explicit, and that I agree should be kept secret), IMO there is no much sense in speaking about "fairness". The real question is: in real life, a dead observere was visible? Many sources state that it was, so it makes sense to have it that way in the game. Same for guns: sources state you detected a broken, empty or jammed gun only when you didn't see it shoot when the chance arised...
Ps: The best option for me would be to have airfields where you can refuel and get a lewis gun if you have no more guns (that's what we do when we play F-t-F)! Being the game span a real short time, it doesn't make much sense, IMVHO.
