Good point. IMHO the best option would be to reveal it only to aircrafts that get the 2-seater tailing.

BTW, IMO an engine damaged should be, instead, visible: a still propellor seems quite an obvious giveaway to me...

For me the most important is to keep the game fun and "simple" (though as realistic as possible). So, in an advanced game where the status of the others plane should not be known, I think it would be fair that if you get a gun destroyed or an observer killed that should stay private. That way, if you have no more guns, you can still stick around and try to scare away the enemy planes (not as fun as shooting but at least you have something to do).

Ps: The best option for me would be to have airfields where you can refuel and get a lewis gun if you have no more guns (that's what we do when we play F-t-F)!
