The possibility to exit to everywhere is given to a programmability problem. The RULE say that you cannot exit to the enemy side and if you go out up/down border you have to shift the map... but you are still in play. I personally respect the rule so will calculate my fuel needed to exit to my side or trying anycase to exit to my side also with an engine broken. Once I had 5 triplanes tailing me over a Fokker DrI... 
Playing this way give me at least 15 dead more and less kill (pilots exiting everywhere), no matter.
