Only a real newbie would try to exit just to get a point win. Most players view the points and winning the game pointless and focus more on killing rather than being killed. There really isn't much else preventing it besides public ridicule of the player that does it. 
As far as leaving to prevent death, it really depends on what type of player you want to be and why the game is fun to you. I started out by trying to preserve my plane if it was badly damaged ( historically accurate play really) but after 500 games or so I needed to spice the game up and started playing thru no matter what damage I took. There have been some exciting kills and changes of luck since I started playing that way.
