Pretty unrealistic, IMHO. Who is to say the fire is not in the fuel tank, which may be right under the seat of the observer?!
Anyway, it would seem to me that the observer would be watching the pilot for a clue to jump!

I think that if a plane is on fire, no shooting is allowed.
