It made flying an SE5 even more 'fun'... You had to fly straight (simulating the pilot holding the stick with his knees while he stood up) to change the drum...


It also meant that gunners had to take a turn to reload every so often.


It means that a two-seat rear gunner effectively had one long and one medium burst in the gun. Then they have to reload for one turn. Given the limit of four drums of ammo, gunners are much more careful about their targets. So, yes, it does notably decrease the superiority of any two-seater, although the gunners are still far more accurate than in the real world.


“Normal” here meaning that the German Parabellum was belt-fed from a 250 round drum verses the Lewis gun with a 98 round magazine. Which suggests that the German gun might have 12 or 13 game “boxes” of ammo verses the Lewis with 5 before being reloaded.
