If you are being fired upon from directly ahead, without deflection, all 'tail' damage converts to engine hits. If you are being fired at without deflection directly from behind, all engine hits become tail damage. It's spelled out in the rules going back to GDW. Any 'secondary damage' like rudder damage, engine, no 3/4's etc. convert back and forth depending on where you actually end up taking the damage. (Again, GDW)
TIP: Don't look at the "Chit" but rather at the description of damage to see where the actual damage was applied. They show the Chits so you see what you pulled "out of the bag." The game then automatically converts the damage to the appropriate sector the same way people had to in the olden days playing the board game.
