| Message text From the article: Reportedly the term had been popularized in prewar French newspapers when referring to sports stars such as soccer players and bicyclists.
I once read that the term was used at that time for whatever was really successful and "hot" in the public's mind. The best dance hall girl, the best cabaret, the best wine of the season...Whatever "everyone is talking about..."
And of course, at this time in the war, shooting down a number of planes was extremely unusual and something "everyone was talking about."
By that story, it is mere "chance" that the number happened to be 5. Of course, to be really remarkable it had to be more than 1, but the story really splashed in the papers after the 5th victory. It could just as easily have been 4 or 6 or 7...
Interesting that the article says Peguod was the first Frenchman to shoot down 5 planes. I had always thought it was Roland Garros. Will have to look that one up!
