I would go along with that, and just recently got myself blasted out of the sky in just such an encounter.
But I'd only go in for it if the pressure was on - like if my plane WAS badly damaged, and I thereby had a chance of taking my enemy down with me (forget the stats!) - or if the fuel was going down and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time (maybe, again, just to take my otherwise completely triumphant enemy with me to hell  ).
These possible outcomes should surely be a reason for any pilot who is not under pressure to avoid a head-on - limiting their moves and giving the underdog the advantage.
