I think because you were smoking during the previous round...

I guess:
if the order of play is like this:

1) check if the smoking planes set fire or extinguish smoke
2) give fire damege to planes in flame
3) resolve combat and give damage

you were damaged during 2) because you set fire during 1). The other plane set fire during 3), so it wasn't damaged.
