Why a downed or retired pilots may be the winner?
I can agree for downed pilots, but surely not for retired pilots (at least, not for pilots retired from the "right" side).
Retiring is part of the game, because we have limited fuel (and different fuel).
For example, imagine a Fokker DVII that shoot down four enemy planes and then retire due to end of fuel. How can you say that he's not the winner of the match?
(Obviously same goes for team victory. Maybe the side that keep the skyes at the end of the game can have a (little) bonus, but nothing more).
