OK. Let's say then: you can win at points also retiring, but you cannot win in any case if you are shot down.
With the only exception of "no last men standing" i.e. the last two players are shot down on same turn the idea it's pretty good.

Well, I remember about an old BM game (10 or 8 players game) where I resulted to be the winner while being the last shot down plane and having downed no enemy planes at all!!!! 
Only I don't know how to resume an ended game to show it here.
